Methodology 4 - Networking

Membership of a network implies a commitment to a group and its work and to cooperation. Networking implies a group connection, based around trust, understanding, and mutuality, that supports collaborative action. A network often takes a member beyond his or her own workplace, and involves interacting with members from other organisations.

The Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts (ACPA)’s Industry Network for Training (ACPAINT) will improve ACPA’s capability to provide pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people into the performing arts industry. Key partnerships on industry input/engagement in VET delivery will be strengthened between ACPA’s staff/students and both mainstream and indigenous performing arts organisations, businesses and commercial companies. The primary focus of this emergent network is to increase employment outcomes for ACPA graduates.

The project will network newly-recruited assessors working in the newly-endorsed coal seam gas sector of the drilling industry to provide professional development in assessment practice, use of national assessment tools and develop understanding of the interface of competency assessment with the required Well Control ticket (licence). Most group members are independent self-employed assessors. Since the application was made, it is apparent that some companies now working in the CSG sector employ personnel with specific responsibility for assessing. These personnel will form an important and relevant addition to the group, and are targeted invitees.

Specific outcomes will include: •The development, amongst network members, of skills to participate in collaborative ventures through an action-learning program which will involve their engagement in a process of collaborative resource development (this process will necessarily involve reflection on and the sharing of practice); •The development of an increased level of trust and reciprocity among network members through both face-to-face and online collaborative activities; •The development of skills in using the new TAFE Queensland Learning Resource Management system as a tool to enhance the processes of collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Industry Trainers and Assessors from the complex industries are already ‘drowning’ in training and assessment demands, and the pressures of skills shortages. This industry network project will give them a ‘lifeline’, to rise above, their current situation and have time to reflect on the need to ‘think smarter’, value the skills that are in existence in their workplace and commence an evolution into a higher level of training and assessing methodologies and innovative strategies in partnership with other practioners in the same situation. This network will ‘harvest’ ideas and initiatives (from participants) and allow for their growth throughout the process.
